PHILLIP WHACK - Fred Wesley & the New JB's
I love the mantra...It plays with ease in all registers from altissimo to bottom... I'm not working hard and the notes play with a strong pop , resonance and presence to them...Playing just got more inspiring:)....
Phillip Whack is a native of Columbia,SC...His parents constantly played music endlessly in the house hold...Being a product of his musical environment ,he picked up the sax at age 11...He went on to study music at Brevard College..As a professional, Phillip has performed with the likes of The O'jays, The Temptations, The Four Tops, Aretha Franklin ,Clarence Clemons ,Branford Marsalis, Wycliffe Gordon, Tom Browne, Fred Wesley and many others... ..
What is your experience when you feel connected into the music?
As a musician I feel that i'm meditating musically....When all cylinders are clicking, it feels like there's a higher spiritual power over you...It's moving your fingers .It's controlling your mind and allowing creativity at a high level to take place....It's got a hold of you...And when everyone on the band stand experiences that collectively, it's a mother lol......
Do you have any fun stories of inspirational moments to share?
I can remember playing with Fred Wesley in Paris one particular time, and on the stage comes Lenny Kravitz....He sat in with us and played drums.....That was definitely a moment i'll remember.....
